I've just released my first commercial game as freeware, as a way to draw attention to my other games. I'd like to get it out to as many locations as possible. Any suggestions? Surely there must be sites that like genuinely freee games?

I suggest that you build your list of sites by searching the Internet for "free games". You can try searches like "free games submit". You can also try variations of the search by including the name of the device (PC, Mac, iPhone, Android, etc.). Press releases can also be effective, but you need a game made for the media.

Try GameJolt works pretty good :)

If its a webgame then there a bunch of sites that you can run it from.

If it's a web game, I'd recommend GameJolt and Kongregate. If it is a downloadable standalone game, try Itch.io or, again, GameJolt :)

I may be wrong here but to draw attention to your other games or to give a downloadable game to the audience, my opinion will be IndieDB. Excellent to build up a community for your games.

You could try our app collage, we will permanently display your game's logo as well as the direct link to it's download if you buy a space

Like others have said, Itch.io and GameJolt are both great places to put free games on for free, especially Itch.io as it's extremely easy to do. For flash games there's also NewGrounds, Kongregate, ArmorGames, and more. For Android there's Google Play (with a single $25 fee for a developer account) and the Amazon App Store. Hope this helps!

All the suggestions here are great locations for generating traffic for a free game. Still, I hope you have a very strong player acquisition strategy in place that goes beyond placing your game on a platform.

Imagine that 10 indie devs today have the same outreach strategy as you and so follow the advice here. Imagine tomorrow 100 do. And then 1000 o_O I think you get my point. This is actually the reality of what is happening in the marketplace. Your game needs much more than a placement. It needs a strong promo.

Just my two cents, hope this helps you. Good luck!

    Carpe Diem!
