btw Dave, I just checked out your blog for the first time. And see that you list your job as "Game desginer" :)

Kudos for getting work done in a cafe environment. I've been over to NY quite a few times and I couldn't concentrate in the hotel rooms!

Hehe, Dave doesn't want to post public sales because he's making gazillions money!
Jokes apart some indies share but most don't. At least in public :)

Well, the game has sold more than 3x the prediction, so we're quite happy! The CD sales alone did this to our apartment:

This is why I do limited runs of physical copies!

Congrats! I'd love 3x prediction for my next game too :)

So CDs were good or bad? May I ask who did the retail publishing and in which countries? Thx.

Hehe great pic ... this reminds me at the time when I worked at Attic and we released the 3rd part of the Realms of Arkania series (shadows over Riva), IIRC it was around December 1996, there were roughly 5000 preorders from direct customers.

Of course the real distribution was done by the publisher and distributors back then but for these preorders, almost the whole team became a kind of shipping taskforce for a short time ;-)

haha, I remember having a room like that once when I was selling The Secret DVD in the UK back in 2007 or 08 (small business venture with friends that made a lot of money quickly then halted when the publisher banned exports from the US)

Me too back in 1996 when I was selling World Golf by mail order.

The dog looks slightly pissed off with the situation. Is his bed under there? :D

Hah. The dog usually sleeps on the couch, so all those packages had him quite confused!

What I like is Dave is unashamed to still be doing things the same way we did 'em in 1995! He probably has NBA Jam hooked up to the TV too.

Bwahahaha! Your wife is too tolerant... TOO tolerant. My similar story was

When I did PR for Tri Synergy (retail) for each game we released I would get 2-3 cases of the game, which I would print mailers for and then go down to the post office and spend a few hours making boxes. In the meantime my method would be to place them all over the floor of the office with the label on top of each box. It worked fine if there was only 1 game going out, but once there were 3 at once to do.... It looked like I had created a hedgemaze out of videogame boxes.

Of course, I am divorced now. I wonder why.

    BWHAHAHAHA :D

Heh. If we sold only physical copies we'd be dead! We only sold the physical version for a limited time as a pre-order incentive, but we weren't expecting them to be this popular. We've been filling out custom forms for a week. Fun times!

Well at least the hard work is directly related to your success. We had got to the point where we were going to hire someone else to do all the printing labels/invoices, packing, and mailing. Perhaps you could consider that?

Oh! I have that somewhere from years ago! Never really played it through though. Hmm, got a sudden urge to try and install it again....

We were caught a bit unawares this time, but if our next game sells as many CD copies we'll definitely be doing that!

You know that's interesting, I've thought about offering CD copies of my games with some bonus content but I feared of ending up with a pile of unsold stuff :)
