If you happen to see other gamers, moderators, or YouTube moderators playing an overlay that shows the ping at the top, you might be interested in how they do it.

This has nothing to do with the Steam launch options and is actually quite simple.

This guide will show you how to check the ping in New World and even overlay the FPS while playing the game.

Also, I will give you some tips on how to reduce the lag in case you experience it.

    Server ping
When you log in and open the game, you will automatically see the best servers for your location. You will be able to see multiple worlds in different regions, each with a number of different servers.

The ping bar is displayed in yellow for more than 100 ms and red for more than 220 ms. When choosing a server, you should look for the lowest possible ping, which is usually the closest server in your area.

Before choosing a world and server, make sure that your friends are all playing on the same world and server. If they are on different servers/worlds, you will not be able to see them and you will only have a limited number of character slots.

After choosing a server, you will enter the world, but no latency status will appear on the screen.

Display of ping and FPS overlays

To view latency and FPS, press "ESC" to enter the game menu. Go to Settings and when it opens you will see several tabs on the left. Go to the Visual Effects tab, find the Show FPS setting and toggle it on.

The default value is set to Off, so turn it on to enable the overlay. Two overlay layers appear in the upper left and upper right corners. The display on the right is the FPS counter. Ignore the latency next to it as it applies to your monitor and not your server connection.

The ping is shown in the upper left corner, the "input latency". This will change all the time, especially when the server is overloaded.

If you're playing the New World PvP side, make sure you don't have any major connection issues. That small difference could be the reason your company could lose the territorial war.

To learn more about how your business works, including PvP, entitlements, and taxes, check out our separate guide.

How to fix a high ping
First of all, you should make sure that the problem is on the server-side (New World) and not from your computer or internet connection. A great way to check this is to check the status of the servers on their website here.

If all of their servers are fine, check the New World subreddit and their Twitter account to see if other players are having the same problem at the same time. Server problems with games usually lead to connection problems for many players and can be heard almost immediately.

This applies to most online games, so you can use this method to see if you are having problems too.

If everything is fine on the New World server-side, it is time to start troubleshooting on your own PC. Learning how to fix latency spikes on a PC can be tedious and tedious. That's because there are so many variables that need to be considered. Just follow our separate instructions and hopefully, the problem will be resolved.
