Just showing whats going on with my current project... I did all the sprites/tiles according to NES pallette just from studying them. This guy has a bunch of animations and I don't know if I went through them all. A few enemies are from assets. Again - I'm all self taught and this isn't a great play-through and ignore the stupid error at the bottom of the screen. Let me know what you guys think. This is probably 4 months into development in my free time. I'm cheating with the jetpack. This level won't have it enabled yet.
The music is from a Castlevania game. The game is inspired by Castlevania, Vice Project Doom, Monster Party and Metroid mostly.

I also made my tilesets and sprites for a lot of levels before going into actual building of levels. So this is just an example of one level. :D

Do you guys prefer the black backgrounds of say Metroid, or the brick walls and textures like Castlevania? The mist is a particle effect and the camera has a filter on it to emulate a CRT TV.
