What is your preferred way of unlocking new characters (each one being better than the previous).
Retro Knight uses game money for now, but will also offer characters for real money.
I always preferred the oldschool method like Street Fighter or racing games where you had to usually defeat the character you wanted to unlock, or beat the game under certain conditions.
if you plan on making money, make it based on a in-game currency (that the player can earn in game and pay/watch adds to gain)
if you plan for it to be more story driven or more integrated into the gameplay itself, add something like it to the mechanics, like helping the player scape of a prison or maybe saving them, unlocks them
if you want you can mix these 2, maybe by making the player has to pay to unlock the area where this player can be unlocked, I feel thgis is more optimal, you can make money, hold back player progress so he simply doesn't steam trhough the game and also provide a bigger reward for the player paying, as you give them a whole new level/area to explore rather than just the character, but after all, it depends for the type ofa game you're going for
I second this, provided the game (a playthrough) is short like Street Fighter or racing games.
If one playthrough takes lots of hours (like in a game with lots of quests) then I think in most cases locking things at all (characters, map areas, items in the NPC's shops etc) doesn't make a game better, from a player's point of view. Specifically it reduces the replay value of the game (a long one with quests)
